Simple Biblical Guidelines for Clothing

Have You Read the Teaching on Modesty?

Despite the teaching on modesty on this site, I still am continually asked the question "What is Modest?".  I have not had ONE man ask me this question.  Not One!  I believe for men, it is cut and dried.  I believe EVERY man understands what a woman dressed "MODESTLY" really is.  Ladies, have you ever asked men what they think modesty is?  Most of you have not, and I think I know the real reason you will not:   You're afraid of the answer!

I know what is going to happen now.  I will get literally bombarded with angry letters and calls because the ladies will think I'm picking on them and trying to place them in a legalistic atmosphere.   The truth is that I am doing neither.  I am, however going to set the record straight and give you at least SOME guidelines I believe are appropriate for Christians.

Let me give what I believe to be Biblical guidelines on the subject of Modesty.

Allow me to give you some public quotes from prominent fashion designers.  Not that this would change your mind at all, but you need to see what the WORLD says about clothing.

Mary Quant, co-designer of the mini skirt had this to say:  "The sole aim and purpose of the wearing of a mini skirt is to entice men and promote licentiousness.  I've found it quite effective at doing just that."

Vivienne Westwood, who helped create the rock punk look, said, "I think fashion is the strongest form of communication there is. … It’s only interesting to me if it’s subversive: that’s the only reason I’m in fashion, to destroy the word ‘conformity’".

Paul McCartney of the Beatles mockingly acknowledges their role in overthrowing sexual distinctions: “There they were in America, all getting house-trained for adulthood with their indisputable principle of life: short hair equals men; long hair equals women. Well, we got rid of that small convention for them. And a few others, too."

Standards of Morality are at stake today.  There is no reason whatsoever, for anyone to dress in an immoral or immodest fashion.  Every man in American knows that morality, modesty and holiness are matters of the heart AND ALSO matters of the body!  There is NO man that I've ever met (of those who admitted this problem) that lusted after any woman's heart!  They way you dress, ladies has a very serious effect on men, not just YOUR man, but other men as well.  ALL men know this.  Why don't women know the same thing?  It is my belief that they DO know it but 'flaunt it' anyway.

I heard of a Pentecostal Pastor's wife and Daughter that taught the young ladies of the church that it was damnable to wear a skirt above their knee but that it was ok to expose some "cleavage".  What?   That is one of the most hypocritical, ungodly things I've ever heard.  You talk about a double standard and a hypocritical stance!  It is NOT "OK" to expose your cleavage OR your thighs to anyone other than your husband.  Period.

I realize many of you reading right now will begin to scream, throw your fits and cry LEGALISM !!!!   You hypocrite.  Don't you accuse me of legalism when you know full well that you draw your own lines when it comes to manners of dress.  There is no way you would allow a woman to teach a Sunday School class in a bikini, especially if your husband is sitting right there with you.  You draw a line.  Most of you (I would hope all of you that claim to be saved) would never wear your underwear in public would you?  So will you now call me a Legalist because I draw my line in clothing at a different place than yours?  Regardless of where you draw your line, let's examine the Bible to see where the line SHOULD be drawn:

The issue is not which articles of clothing are modest or immodest.  The issue is not whether a particular dress is ok.  What may be Ok on one woman may be very immodest on another.  I have never and I will never hold up a suit or a dress and say whether it is Christian.  That is missing the point of scripture anyway.  The question should be WHAT KIND OF CLOTHING SHOULD I WEAR?

Instead of attempting to make a list of what is good, acceptable, right, and what is not quite so:  It is my desire, rather to show you some PRINCIPLES by which you can judge YOURSELF concerning your clothing.
